honda crz

When the Honda CR-Z concept was debuted, the most striking feature was its styling. It was instantly obvious that this would be a new type of hybrid and Honda fans quickly took an eager interest in the vehicle. With styling that harkens back to the beloved CR-X, many enthusiasts, including myself, felt an emotional stir from within and an instant curiosity. Along with this interest came an anxious feeling to see the production version. But as a mega car enthusiast, I have learned not to get overly excited with concept cars, as many times concepts look much better than production ready showroom goods.

I impatiently looked forward to the first time I would have a chance to see the new 2011 CR-Z in person. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the production CR-Z looked strikingly similar to the concept that announced this forward thinking vehicle. Honda labels CR-Z’s distinct shape as “one-motion wedge form.” I call it sleek styling that doesn’t disappoint from any angle.

The front end is perfectly aggressive with a prominent front grille that looks rightly placed. The hood is low slung and the profile flows well from front to rear aided by what Honda calls “deeply inset beltlines.” These lines help break up decently sized panels that would have seemed too large without them and give the side profile a sharper character. The rear fenders are broad and quite bold considering the sport compact nature of this car. It’s one of my favorite design features of this vehicle. I can already imagine how mean it will look once the stance is brought closer to the ground and the wheel wells filled up with more aggressive wheels and tires. The back end of this car actually reminds me not only of the spunky Honda CR-X but also of the economical first generation Honda Insight. I believe that Honda designers succeeded in fusing both compact car designs in a great manner, thus showcasing the integral fun yet green DNA that the CR-Z embodies.

Add all of it together and all I can say is that I’m extremely excited. Excited at the chance to drive the vehicle and even more excited to see what we, in the aftermarket industry, can do to take it even further. The CR-Z already has great lines out of the box. The aggressive and bold styling provides a great foundation to customize and create some very striking and sporty looking vehicles that are guaranteed to turn some heads.
